The “instant message” was invented by Compuserve in the 1960s.  The Buddy List was invented by Steve Williams.  Thanks to the influx of HP/UX and SGI machines, the proliferation of TCL/TK on thoses systems, AIM was born.  Microsoft Visual C “double plus” and some hacking later…  was history.
